Our rewilding sanctuary just got bigger

Our eastern quoll recovery program is growing! Together with the Invasive Species Council’s Rewilding Australia Program, we’re breeding and releasing more quolls back into the wild. With support from the Tony and Lisette Lewis Wildlife Foundation, we’ve expanded the Shoalhaven Feral-Free Area from 68 to 218 hectares of fox-free habitat — giving quolls a bigger, safer place to call home.

After 60 years, the quoll comeback has begun – and we’re leading it.

In 1963, the last wild eastern quoll disappeared from mainland Australia. Introduced predators — foxes, feral cats and dogs — wiped them out from the mainland entirely, leaving Tasmania as their last refuge.

Now, after more than 60 years, we're bringing them back.

Sydney Zoo rewilds eastern quolls to a protected, fox-free sanctuary in the Shoalhaven — where they can once again hunt, breed and raise joeys in the wild, restoring the balance they once brought to the bush.

Be part of the quoll comeback

A quoll needs more than protected land to make a comeback. It needs somewhere dry to sleep, somewhere safe to raise joeys, and somewhere to hide from natural predators. That’s why we are planting trees, installing nest boxes and adding rock piles.
