Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have utilised natural materials from their local environment using skill and innovation for many thousands of years. Students will explore how a wide variety of woven designs were used for fishing, gathering, and storing food, and carrying water. This practical workshop will teach students how to weave with natural materials using traditional methods.

This workshop introduces students to Aboriginal knowledge of astronomy, focusing on how Aboriginal peoples use the stars to predict seasonal changes and followed the moon’s phases for time keeping and sustainability. Through storytelling, students will develop an understanding of the deep scientific knowledge embedded in Aboriginal cultures and leave with a broader appreciation for how First Nations knowledge of space continues to thrive today.

NEW SYLLABUS program
Take your students beyond the classroom and into the wilds of the zoo as they explore how scientists classify living things. This interactive program brings the new syllabus to life with thermal camera technology, hands-on activities, from using dichotomous keys to investigating adaptations in Australian species. Students will discover the diversity of life, learn why classification matters, and see real examples of how animals survive in their environments all while enjoying an unforgettable zoo experience.

PLAN YOUR EXCURSION
The workshop will run for just over 90 minutes and explore the Australian precinct and Aquarium. Before and/or after your workshop, you can explore the Asia and Africa precinct.
This NEW program utilises technology to best engage students as they navigate the zoo with their Sydney Zoo teacher. Students are asked to bring a set of cabled headphones with a standard 3.5mm jack (not apple product headphones). One can be borrowed by students that do not have one.

Get hands on with microbes and poo at the zoo!
Quantal Bioscience and Sydney Zoo have partnered in a world first.
Students:
- Collect fecal samples from hindgut fermenters at Sydney Zoo and learn about their diet from zoo experts.
- Quantal Bioscience scientists complete a lab session with students to extract DNA from the samples and analyse the results. This program is impacting the REAL WORLD as data gathered by students helps inform zoo keepers and nutritionists about the health and wellbeing of species at the zoo.

Get hands on with data! This unique program will take your students on a journey into the gut health of some of the most iconic animals at Sydney Zoo! Hindgut fermenter species rely on microbes to digest their food and keep them healthy. How do we use DNA analysis and data to monitor the health of these species?

This data set has been collected as part of the Zoo of Poo program with Sydney Zoo zookeepers and is organised to be accessible to high school students learning data science.
