STAGE 3

Traditional art

This hands-on workshop explores traditional Aboriginal art with a focus on ochre painting. In this session students will learn about how Aboriginal art was used as a communication and recording tool. Students will also gain the practical experience of creating art through traditional methods.

This program incurs an additional $2 fee per student for incursions only for art materials.

Survival and sustainability

Led by our Sydney Zoo Cultural guides, students will learn about the sustainable use of native bush tucker plants and animals, and the cultural significance they have to First Nations Peoples. This workshop will explore tools and techniques to prepare food and manage the land. Students will also be guided through the traditional practice of weaving and take home a woven bracelet they will make during the program.

Rights and freedom

Delve into the complex history of Aboriginal people in their pursuit for recognition and equality. Our guides will share some of the iconic and historical events that have led to a resilient and ongoing fight for justice since colonisation till present day.

History, geography, colonisation and equality

Amazing adaptations

Stage 3 students will get face-to-face with incredible creatures and uncover the secrets of survival in the animal kingdom. This hands-on program dives into structural and behavioural adaptations, protecting global environments, specifically looking at the charismatic chimpanzee’s habitat, and the role humans can play in conserving wildlife. With interactive activities including meeting ambassador animals along the way, students will explore how animals survive in their environments and how we can protect them. It’s science, sustainability, and adventure all rolled into one excursion workshop.

PLAN YOUR EXCURSION
This workshop will run for just over 90 minutes exploring the Africa and Asia precincts with your Sydney Zoo teacher. Before and/or after your workshop, you can explore the Australian precinct.
