The minerals inside mobile phones—like coltan—are often sourced from regions that overlap with critical wildlife habitat. As demand for electronics grows, so does pressure on these environments, putting species like gorillas and chimpanzees at risk.
Recycling your old phone is a simple way to reduce demand for newly mined materials and support the protection of these habitats.
At Sydney Zoo, we’re helping restore and reconnect forests across Central Africa—giving great apes the space they need to move, forage and thrive, while supporting local communities to protect these ecosystems into the future.
Through our partnership with MobileMuster, old phones are transformed into real conservation outcomes. Valuable materials are recovered and reused, cutting e-waste and reducing pressure on natural habitats. “Recycling your phone through MobileMuster directly supports wildlife conservation,” said Liz Gerber, Conservation and Community Manager at Sydney Zoo. “Every device kept out of landfill helps reduce demand for minerals sourced from critical habitats and supports efforts to restore forests in Central Africa.” Join us by bringing in your unused phones and be part of a nationwide movement creating real impact. Since joining the program, our community has recycled over 500 mobile phones—and counting.

• 1,419.18 g of mineral resource use

• 1 kg of particulates
• Equivalent to 10 trees planted.
