Sydney Zoo mourns loss of beloved chimp Mogli

April 9, 2021

Sydney Zoo in Western Sydney is sad to announce the death of Mogli a beloved member of their chimpanzee family. His passing has left the entire team in deep shock and grief over the tragic loss.

During the zookeepers’ morning routine check, Mogli, aged 10, was discovered deceased in the moat and his body was retrieved by the zoo’s expert team. Sydney Zoo has reviewed CCTV footage which provided no clarity. The exact cause of death is inconclusive, and a post-mortem will be conducted.

Sydney Zoo followed safety protocols by temporarily closing the zoo before opening again shortly after the body was retrieved and the zoo was able to resume normal operations.

“Today we lost a family member. Mogli had a personality that was larger than life. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, piercing amber eyes and cheeky smile. This has been a very sad day for everyone”. Said Lou Grossfeldt, Primate Curator, Sydney Zoo.

“At times like this, the zoo’s focus is to support the entire team”. Said Duty Manager, Lisa Christie, Sydney Zoo.

Sydney Zoo would like to reiterate that media reports of an escaped animal were false.

Members and guests are encouraged to leave messages of condolences and support for the Sydney Zoo team on the Sydney Zoo Facebook page.
