Sydney Zoo completes chimpanzee post-mortem

April 9, 2021

Saying farewell is never easy, especially when a tragic accident causes such a devastating loss.

Following a thorough investigation and post-mortem, our expert team and vet have concluded that Mogli passed away as a result of a tragic misadventure that led to him drowning.

In the early hours of the morning, CCTV footage shows Mogli at the front of the habitat where he makes an unexplainable turn, breaching the safety barriers, and entering the water.

Our team has not been able to determine why Mogli breached the barrier surrounding the moat, which has operated effectively for over two years without incident. However, as a further precaution, we plan to add additional naturalistic materials to the habitat to ensure the safety and protection of our chimpanzee troop.

Our team remains deeply saddened by Mogli’s passing. He will always be remembered for his playful personality and will be missed by our team.

Sydney Zoo would like to thank the community for their support and condolences.
