Glyptodontinae – "Sculpted Tooth"

Glyptodons were armoured mammals related to modern armadillos, with a large dome-shaped shell that covered their entire body.

This shell was made of bony plates, providing strong protection against Ice Age predators, including early humans. Some species also had heavy, club-like tails that could be used for defence.

Glyptodons could reach the size of a small car. They were around 1.5 metres tall and up to 3 metres long, weighing as much as 2 tonnes. Their massive shells may even have been used by early humans as natural shelters from the harsh Ice Age climate.

DID YOU
KNOW?

A Glyptodon’s weakness was the lack of scales on its stomach. Despite looking like moving tanks, they still had to be careful and protect their underside when threatened.
