Aenocyon dirus – "Fearsome Dog"

You might have heard of Dire Wolves in fantasy stories, but they were real animals and powerful Ice Age predators. They were larger, more muscular, and heavier than today’s grey wolves.

With strong jaws and sharp teeth, Dire Wolves hunted large prey such as bison. They worked in packs, chasing and surrounding animals together—similar to how modern wolves hunt today. These social groups helped them survive in harsh Ice Age environments.

Dire Wolves lived across much of North and South America, from icy grasslands to forested regions. Towards the end of the Ice Age, many of their large prey animals died out. At the same time, competition with early humans for food such as bison may have also contributed to their decline and eventual extinction.

DID YOU
KNOW?

Dire Wolves are not true wolves as we know them today. Instead, they are evolutionarily closer to jackals.
